GRA 2201: print II - Digital Pre-Publishing (Pre-Press)
- Digital print pre-press (make-ready/paste-up) preparing image, object and layout for press.
- Learn electronic publishing and digital prepress using image creation, editing software and page layout applications to prepare files for print and electronic media.
- Demonstrate knowledge of printing standards, production processes, pre-press and PostScript technology.
- Use digital pre-press production techniques to achieve trapping, choking, knocking-out, overprinting and spreading to produce color separations for spot and process color.
- Operate the major functions of an industry production standard page layout application to create multi-component documents and to create style sheets and document templates.
- Import, manipulate and modify images, text and graphics into a page layout application.
- Merge and composite images and text for a specified pictorial or communicative effect.
- Use calibration software to calibrate a full digital workflow from scan to page.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of additive and subtractive color models, color space, and gamut in relation to digital and traditional technology and print production methods including RGB, CMYK, HSB, PMS and CIELAB.
- Understand and apply the correct principles in the selection, matching and specification of colors for reproduction.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of undercolor removal, achromatic reproduction and dot gain
- While ADOBE Acrobat and ADOBE InDesign is the dominant software used, this is a PATHTM and STORY class focused most on D3SIGNTM.
- Experience is gained by designing, editing and printing to press a process-color, 16 page bound signature.
- This course focuses on a magazine project.
- Experience is learned by intriguing an audience through a magazine of professional storylines and imagery.
- Project: Create, edit and print in process color an actual cut, bound 16 page magazine (two 8-page signatures).
In the process of creating an advanced sixteen page full color magazine (do not perform imposition) learn advanced software tools, print industry, digital layout and electronic makeready production. - EXAMPLE 16 Page Magazine (download 1.9 MB PDF)
- Layout 16 pages (equivalent to two, eight-page signatures) later bound into an 8 x 10 inch magazine Plan on cropping all sheets a printed 8.5 x 11 inch paper to the 8 x 10 inch final size).
- Bleeds are optional and at your discretion from page to page.
- The magazine will be about yourself. Consider specific and unique elements and layout for the cover, editorial pages, the back page, appropriate style ad-layouts, lrger ones near cover and back, etc..
- Perhaps design and include your own self-fulfilling advertisements, etc.
- Include articles about your accomplisments with pictures of yourself and your work product.
- Include an editor's statement, your resume, a biography (one to two paragraphs) and an artist's (or designer's) statement.
- Create a basic table of contents.
